Below is a structured analysis of the <strong>main operational phases<\/strong>\u00a0and some engineering <strong>solutions<\/strong>, supported by practical <strong>examples<\/strong> of real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projects<\/a> developed by Incide Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference between seismic improvement and seismic retrofitting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Seismic retrofitting increases structural safety compared to the current state, without reaching the parameters of new constructions. Adaptation, on the other hand, is mandatory in regulated cases and involves alignment with the performance requirements for new buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go into more detail to find out what <strong>stages<\/strong> seismic adaptation consists of and the<strong> main techniques<\/strong> to be applied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Preliminary analyses and structural surveys<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Every effective intervention begins with a thorough <strong>assessment of the current state of affairs<\/strong>: geometric and material surveys, localized tests, analysis of foundations and load-bearing structures. These investigations allow us to identify <strong>structural cracks, plaster detachment, deterioration of reinforced concrete, or weak points in the connections<\/strong> between elements.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage, both <strong>non-destructive and destructive tests<\/strong> can be carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of the materials and obtain the level of knowledge (LC1, LC2, LC3) required by the regulations for structural calculation in seismic areas.<\/p>\n<p>A significant example is the project for the new university residence at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/project\/restoration-ex-caserma-pepe-e-bellemo-venice-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former Pepe e Bellemo Barracks in Venice<\/a>, a historic building dating back to 1596 that has been converted into a residential complex for students. To ensure a targeted structural intervention compatible with the original construction characteristics, Incide carried out an <strong>extensive diagnostic survey<\/strong> of all load-bearing elements.<\/p>\n<p>The following were used for the <strong>masonry<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>single and double flat jacks;<\/li>\n<li>penetrometric tests on mortars;<\/li>\n<li>visual tests and petrographic sampling;<\/li>\n<li>masonry endoscopy and radar surveys (GPR), including on the foundations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>wooden floors<\/strong> were investigated with <strong>visual and geometric analyses<\/strong>, <strong>sclerometric and resistographic tests<\/strong> to assess the internal condition of the fibers, and morpho-anatomical sampling to analyze wood species, biological degradation, and structural quality.<\/p>\n<p>For reinforced <strong>concrete floors<\/strong>, different techniques were used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>localized scarification and reinforcement testing;<\/li>\n<li>steel sampling and hardness testing, with pull-out tests;<\/li>\n<li>sclerometry and endoscopy;<\/li>\n<li>georadar (GPR) surveys to verify the distribution of the reinforcement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the<strong> wooden trusses<\/strong>, morphological-anatomical, sclerometric, and resistographic analyses were conducted to assess the need for consolidation or partial replacement.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>exploratory phase is essential for any seismic retrofitting or improvement project<\/strong> because it allows for the development of a design that is truly calibrated to the structural behavior of the building, reducing uncertainties and margins of risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Consolidation of foundations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Existing foundations, especially in historic or masonry buildings, are often unable to withstand the seismic stresses required by current regulations. Therefore, the following measures are taken:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consolidation of foundations with piles or micropiles;<\/li>\n<li>extension of existing masonry foundations;<\/li>\n<li>injection of expanding resins into poorly cohesive soils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the design of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/project\/renovation-of-leonardo-company-canteen-la-spezia-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonardo Global Solutions company canteen<\/a> in La Spezia,<strong> D800 mm piles and D220 mm micropiles<\/strong> were used to create a new <strong>bracing structure<\/strong> founded independently of the existing one.<\/p>\n<p>In the heart of Padua&#8217;s historic center, Incide oversaw the conservative restoration of the <strong>17th-century<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/project\/restoration-of-palazzo-roccabonella\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palazzo Roccabonella<\/a>, designed in part by <strong>Gi\u00f2 Ponti<\/strong>, transforming it into an elegant residential complex. Structural reinforcement of pillars, beams, and masonry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To reinforce a load-bearing masonry wall, techniques such as <strong>hooping<\/strong>, <strong>applying reinforced plaster<\/strong>, or <strong>inserting structural mesh and fiber-reinforced materials<\/strong> can be used. The choice depends on the type of masonry and the intended use of the building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Structural reinforcement<\/strong> is central to seismic retrofitting, both for <strong>reinforced concrete<\/strong> and <strong>load-bearing masonry buildings<\/strong>. The most common techniques include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>encasing pillars with additional reinforced concrete and new reinforcement;<\/li>\n<li>hooping pillars with steel profiles;<\/li>\n<li>reinforcing reinforced concrete beams with section increases or fiber-reinforced materials;<\/li>\n<li>reinforcing load-bearing walls and inserting structural reinforcement meshes;<\/li>\n<li>using concrete reinforced with glass fibers or composite materials (FRP, FRCM).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reinforcing pillars through cladding can be integrated into architectural elements or finishes, without becoming visible. In buildings with historical constraints, non-invasive technologies are preferred, such as fiber meshes or hidden metal profiles.<\/p>\n<p>A very important example of this application can be found in the <strong>new Luxottica headquarters<\/strong> in Via Tortona in Milan, a project for which Incide collaborated with <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pichler.pro\/it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pichler<\/a><\/span> and DL to redevelop an old industrial building into an exhibition\/administrative headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>To reinforce a load-bearing masonry wall, techniques such as hooping, the application of <strong>reinforced plaster<\/strong>, or the <strong>insertion of structural mesh and fiber-reinforced materials<\/strong> can be used. The choice depends on the type of masonry and the intended use of the building.<\/p>\n<p>Another example of expertise in this field is the <strong>validation of the seismic retrofitting of the PG314 Thermal Power Plant carried out for Rome Airport<\/strong>, a project in which, among many other interventions, walls of considerable height were also reinforced using various techniques.<\/p>\n<p>For the La Spezia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/project\/renovation-of-leonardo-company-canteen-la-spezia-italy\/\">Leonardo Global Solutions company canteen<\/a>, the prefabricated pillars built in the 1970s were not adequate to withstand seismic activity, so they were<strong> reinforced with metal cladding<\/strong> and an increase in the structural section. Bracing and structural stiffeners<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To improve the overall response of the building to seismic action, <strong>vertical or horizontal bracing<\/strong> is introduced, <strong>structures that create stiffness<\/strong> for the box-like behavior of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The main <strong>solutions<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>steel or reinforced masonry bracing;<\/li>\n<li>CA partitions with steel reinforcement anchored to the foundations;<\/li>\n<li>shock transmittal, devices for dissipating seismic forces;<\/li>\n<li>dumpers, also known as seismic force dissipators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Types of bracing for seismic retrofitting<\/h3>\n<p>The most common are<strong> steel bracing<\/strong> for lightness and effectiveness, and reinforced concrete partitions where the geometry allows. To be truly effective, <strong>bracing must be correctly dimensioned<\/strong>, founded, and connected to the existing structure so that it integrates with the overall dynamic behavior.<br \/>\nFor example, in the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incide.it\/en\/project\/hall-3-ai-colli-hospital-padua-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ospedale ai Colli &#8211; Padiglione 3 building in Padua<\/a>, Incide carried out horizontal bracing work by<strong> stiffening the roof structure<\/strong> and placing<strong> new structural elements<\/strong> under the wooden trusses.
