The algorithms link the elements of the model together; the actual design, construction, structural and production constraints guide the choice of parameter values. When a parameter changes, the model updates, allowing one to verify whether the new configuration still complies with those constraints.

In the AEC sector, parametric design is applied to structures, façades, roofs and building components, and can be used throughout the design process, from defining the form right through to calculation and production. Its value increases when there are many interdependent variables, or when the same logic needs to adapt to different configurations.

In this guide, we look at how parametric design works, its relationship with BIM, the software it uses, its advantages and limitations, and how Incide has applied it in three very different projects.

What is parametric design?

In everyday usage, “parametric modelling” and “parametric design” are often used interchangeably; in this article, we distinguish between them. Parametric modelling involves building a model in which algorithms link the elements to one another. It can operate locally, within an individual object, as with a Revit family, a Tekla component or constrained geometry in AutoCAD. Alternatively, it can operate globally, with algorithms linking objects across the overall model, for example through a Grasshopper or Dynamo definition: if a façade surface changes, the panel layout, support positions and substructure are updated. The term parametric design applies when the algorithms also incorporate the actual design constraints: construction, structural, production and functional requirements. At this point, the model does more than generate consistent geometry: it checks which configurations satisfy the constraints and narrows the options down to feasible solutions, from which the designer can choose.

What are the fundamental principles of parametric design?

A parametric system is based on three elements:

Parameters: the system’s free variables, such as design values that the designer can vary within defined ranges to generate different configurations. These may include dimensions, angles, spacings, numbers of elements or subdivisions. They must be distinguished from input data, such as loads or site characteristics, which are fixed by the context and applicable standards rather than chosen by the designer. Each combination of values corresponds to a possible configuration; the constraints determine which configurations are acceptable.

Constraints: the conditions that every solution must satisfy. They may be geometric, such as parallelism between two elements or tangency between two surfaces, and help keep the model consistent. They may also be actual design constraints: a panel’s planarity to keep production costs down, maximum transportable dimensions, a clearance that must not be exceeded, or structural criteria incorporated directly into the model or checked through a link to analysis software. These latter constraints are what turn modelling into design. A parameter’s range defines what can vary; a constraint defines what the result must satisfy.

Algorithm: the procedure that turns parameters into geometry and information while respecting the constraints. In other words, it is a finite sequence of unambiguous instructions that produces a defined output from specified inputs. The algorithm determines how the elements depend on one another—for example, how support spacing depends on panel dimensions, or how a surface is subdivided according to its curvature. It can operate locally, within an individual object, where it is often built into the software, or globally, linking objects across the overall model. In the latter case, it is generally written by the designer, either as code or as a visual node-based diagram in Grasshopper or Dynamo. When algorithms also incorporate checks against actual design constraints, the model becomes a design tool.

This approach emerged through two major shifts away from traditional design methods. For centuries, design was developed through drawing: the direct movement of a hand tracing lines on paper. Designers think in terms of relationships, proportions and geometry, but the drawing does not preserve those relationships: each line is independent of the others, and consistency across the whole is maintained in the designer’s mind, not by the medium. CAD (Computer-Aided Design) replaced the pen with the mouse and introduced tools such as blocks and external references, but the underlying method remained the same: if a dimension changes, every related element must be corrected individually. This is an additive logic.

The first shift is towards associative logic: in parametric modelling, elements are linked by algorithms, locally or globally, and the model itself maintains geometric consistency. The second is the incorporation of actual design constraints into the algorithms: when a parameter changes, the model does not simply redraw itself; it also makes it possible to check which values meet construction, structural and production requirements. The process therefore moves from drawing an object to designing the process that produces the solution.

Neither a parametric model nor an algorithm, in itself, guarantees a change in method. They can be used to reproduce an already known solution more quickly (computerisation), or to explore solutions that were not known in advance (computation). The difference lies not in the tool, but in how it is used.

https://www.incide.it/wp-content/uploads/Incide_grand-tehatre-rabat-grasshopper_definition.mp4

How does parametric design work?

The basic mechanism is always the same: parameters feed into the algorithm, the algorithm generates geometry and information, and the model is regenerated whenever a parameter changes. Take a steel truss. The span is an input value, determined by the distance between the supports; height, number of bays, diagonal arrangement and sections of the members can instead be parameters. Changing one of them recalculates the position of the nodes and the length of the members, and the updated data can be transferred to the calculation model without redrawing the geometry.

Design begins when the result is checked against the actual design constraints. The process then becomes a cycle: generate a configuration, check it, adjust the parameters and regenerate it. The cycle may be guided by the designer, who explores and evaluates alternatives, or assigned to a system that automatically explores many parameter combinations and evaluates them against given objectives and criteria. This is generative design, discussed in more detail below.

There are two approaches to developing a form. In form making, the designer establishes the form and then refines it: parameters control it, while constraints adjust it. In form finding, the form is not decided in advance but emerges from the process. In structural engineering, this means finding the equilibrium configuration of a system under loads and constraints, such as an arch that works in compression only under a given loading condition, or a tensioned membrane that forms a minimal surface. Form-finding has its own internal iteration: the solver approaches equilibrium through successive approximations. In practice, the two approaches are often combined: a form established by the architect is refined using structural criteria, or a form found through computation is adapted to spatial and construction requirements.

Form-finding predates computers. Gaudí studied arches and vaults using hanging-chain models which, when inverted, produce compression-only forms. Heinz Isler developed his shells from impregnated fabrics that were allowed to hang and then turned upside down. Frei Otto used soap films to find minimal surfaces. Sergio Musmeci relied on physical models to explore the form of the Basento Bridge in Potenza. These were computational processes in every sense, but analogue ones: the form emerged from the interaction between forces and material. Today, the same principles are simulated using physics solvers such as Kangaroo, integrated directly into the parametric model.

https://www.incide.it/wp-content/uploads/Incide_parametric-tesnile-strucural-design.mp4

How do you create a parametric design?

The process can be divided into five stages, although in practice they do not follow a strictly linear sequence. Parameters and constraints often need to be redefined while the algorithm is being written, and every design change can restart the cycle.

Define objectives, constraints and input data. Before modelling, establish what the design must comply with (construction, structural, production and regulatory constraints) and which data are fixed by the context, such as loads and site characteristics.

Choose the parameters. This is the most delicate decision, because not everything should become a parameter. A model with too many parameters becomes difficult to control; one with too few cannot accommodate actual design changes. A variation range must also be defined for each parameter.

Write the algorithm. Build the rules that link the elements, both locally and globally, together with the constraint checks.

Generate geometry and information. The model produces not only the form but also related data: quantities, element lists, and information for calculation and production.

Explore, check and choose. Vary the parameters, compare the configurations that satisfy the constraints, and select the solution.

The initial workload is greater than with traditional modelling, but the investment pays off when changes are frequent or when a family of similar solutions needs to be adapted to different conditions. In such cases, the same definition can also be reused on subsequent projects.

What is parametric design used for? Areas of application

Parametric design is particularly useful when a project involves many interdependent variables, frequent changes are expected, numerous similar but not identical elements must be managed consistently, or geometry, calculation and production need to remain connected.

In the AEC sector, it is mainly used for:

structures with complex geometries, such as space frames, shells and steel structures in which most members are different;

façades and building envelopes, especially when panels have different shapes and dimensions;

roofs and double-curved surfaces;

recurring building types, such as industrial buildings and modular structures, which need to be adapted quickly to different dimensions and conditions;

components intended for digital manufacturing, where the model directly generates data for CNC machines or formwork production.

For a simple, one-off project with few anticipated changes, however, the effort required to build a parametric definition is unlikely to pay off.

What is the difference between parametric and non-parametric design?

The difference between parametric and non-parametric design lies in how geometry is created and modified.

In direct, or non-parametric, modelling, the designer edits geometry by manipulating vertices, edges and surfaces. Each element is independent of the others, so changing one does not affect neighbouring elements. This is the additive logic described above, transferred to a three-dimensional model.

In parametric modelling, geometry is the result of parameters, constraints and algorithms: changing a parameter updates all the elements that depend on it.

Neither approach is inherently superior. Direct modelling offers freedom and speed when making local changes, and is often the best choice in the early stages of form development or for unique geometries that are unlikely to change significantly. Parametric modelling becomes advantageous when many linked elements must remain consistent or alternative configurations need to be compared quickly. Many software packages support both approaches: Rhino, for example, combines direct modelling with Grasshopper’s parametric definitions.

What is the difference between parametric, algorithmic and generative design?

The three terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different aspects. They are neither stages in a hierarchy nor alternatives: each answers a different question, and in practice they often coexist within the same project.

Parametric answers the question: what happens if an input changes? A model is parametric when it is governed by parameters, constraints and algorithms, and every change propagates to the elements that depend on it. As explained above, the process is called parametric modelling as long as the model maintains geometric consistency; it becomes parametric design when the algorithms incorporate the actual design constraints.

Algorithmic answers the question: how are the rules written? Algorithmic design is used when the designer explicitly writes the procedure that generates the model, either as code or as a visual node-based diagram, rather than simply adjusting the values of predefined objects.

Generative answers the question: who explores the solutions? In generative design, a system automatically produces numerous alternatives and evaluates them against objectives and criteria defined by the designer, who then chooses the options that best meet them.

Examples show that these are independent properties. A library component in Revit or Tekla, used by adjusting only its values, is parametric but not algorithmic, because its rules are already built into the software. A script that generates geometry using values fixed in the code is algorithmic but not parametric, because no value is exposed as a variable that can be changed. A Grasshopper definition with parameters is both parametric and algorithmic. The same applies to form finding with Kangaroo, although this is not generative: it seeks an equilibrium configuration rather than exploring alternatives. A definition becomes generative when it is coupled with an evolutionary solver, such as Galapagos, which varies the parameters and evaluates the resulting configurations.

https://www.incide.it/wp-content/uploads/Incide_grand-tehatre-rabat-parametric-model.mp4

What is the difference between BIM and parametric design?

BIM and parametric design address different needs and can be used together. BIM is a method for managing information about a built asset: through a shared digital model, it coordinates disciplines and supports decisions throughout the asset’s life cycle, from design to operation. Parametric design, by contrast, is used to generate and control geometry and design decisions through parameters, constraints and algorithms.

The two approaches intersect in two ways. Objects in BIM software, such as Revit families or Tekla components, are already parametric in themselves. In addition, algorithms written by the designer can control the BIM model. With a dynamic link, such as the one between Grasshopper and Tekla or between Dynamo and Revit, parameter changes propagate through to the model. With a simple geometry import, by contrast, the link is broken, and subsequent changes must be re-imported or corrected manually.

For this reason, parametric design should not be confused with the dimensions of BIM: it is a method that can support them, for example by providing quantities and data for estimating time and costs.

Which software is used for parametric design?

In the AEC sector, tools are distinguished mainly by the role they play in the process. At the global level, where algorithms are written by the designer, the main tools are Rhino with Grasshopper, the most widely used visual programming environment for parametric design, and Dynamo, which performs a similar role within Revit. In both cases, when nodes are not sufficient, code can be written in Python or C#.

Grasshopper has an ecosystem of plugins that bring actual design constraints into the parametric model: Kangaroo for form finding and physical simulation, Karamba3D for structural calculation directly within the definition, and Galapagos for generative exploration using evolutionary algorithms.

The local level is handled by BIM and construction software such as Revit and Tekla Structures, whose objects are already parametric and which can be connected to Grasshopper. Structural analysis software, which receives data from the parametric model for verification, and software for production, which converts geometry into construction drawings and files for CNC machines, complete the picture.

More important than any single software package is the ability to connect them. In the cases described below, the workflow includes, depending on the project, Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo, Staad.Pro, Tekla, Revit and Inventor.

How does parametric drawing work in AutoCAD?

AutoCAD offers basic parametric tools, mainly in two dimensions. Geometric constraints establish relationships such as parallelism, perpendicularity, tangency or coincidence. Dimensional constraints set lengths, distances, angles and radii, and can be linked by formulas. Dynamic blocks can also be used to create elements whose shape and dimensions change according to predefined parameters.

This is a form of local parametric modelling, useful for details and standard components that need to be drawn in multiple variations. It is not designed, however, to control complex systems or integrate structural and production constraints. The tools described above are used for those purposes.

Why use parametric design? The main advantages

The first advantage is change management. When a parameter changes, geometry, quantities and related information are updated together, reducing remodelling work and the risk of inconsistencies between different parts of the project.

The second is the ability to make better-informed decisions. Comparing multiple configurations at an early stage and checking them against actual design constraints makes it possible to choose on the basis of evidence rather than becoming attached to the first solution drawn.

The third is continuity between project stages. The same model can feed into structural calculation, the construction model and production, reducing manual transfers in which time and information can be lost.

The fourth is control over complexity. Thousands of different elements, such as the panels of a double-curved façade, become manageable because they are governed by consistent rules rather than modelled one by one.

Limitations to consider: in addition to the initial investment in skills and time, parametric design has its own limitations. Complex definitions are difficult to maintain and understand for people who did not write them, and the process can become dependent on a small number of individuals. A parametric model handles changes to parameter values well, but not changes in the underlying design approach: if the concept changes, the model often has to be rebuilt. Moving between different software packages can lead to information loss when the link is not dynamic. Finally, automation does not replace engineering judgement: results must always be checked, and responsibility remains with the designer.

Examples of parametric design in engineering

The following three projects illustrate three different uses of parametric design. In Rabat, the geometry was defined by the architect, and the task was to make it buildable. In Abano, the roof form was developed through form finding. In Saccolongo, parametric modelling was used to manage a recurring building type and generate both the calculation model and the construction model. In all three cases, the algorithms incorporate the actual design constraints: construction, structural and production requirements.

Grand Théâtre de Rabat: 5,400 GRC panels and steel structures

The Grand Théâtre de Rabat, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and completed in 2022, features an envelope made up of 5,400 GRC panels (glass fibre-reinforced concrete), each different from the others. Commissioned by the façade contractor, Incide developed the construction project for the envelope and its supporting substructures.

The starting point was the three-dimensional model received from the Zaha Hadid studio, together with the design constraints. The form did not need to be invented: the task was to rationalise it, translating it into buildable and suitable for production elements while respecting the architectural intent. Rhino and Grasshopper were used to reconstruct the panel geometries and adapt them to the construction solutions agreed with the client; reinforcement and fixing details were inserted automatically. The steel substructure was generated from mathematical functions and linked directly to the construction model in Tekla, where the panel support details were also generated automatically. The panels’ construction geometries were then transferred to Inventor to produce drawings and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) files for production the moulds.

This is a typical case in which every element is different, yet all must comply with the same rules: geometry, structure, fixings and production remain consistent because they are governed by the same system.

Abano Theatre: form finding and a space-frame structure

For the Thermal Forum, the new theatre in Abano Terme, Incide defined the roof form and its associated space-frame structure: two layers of triangular grids connected by diagonals, the solution best suited to balancing strength, feasibility and cost. The steel structure was supplied by MERO, and the roof membrane by Canobbio.

The surface, which can be described as three deformed cones joined together, was not predefined. It was developed through a form finding process using Grasshopper and Kangaroo. Kangaroo was used as a geometric tool: the forces, constraints and stiffness applied to the mesh did not represent actual loads, but were used to shape it until an equilibrium configuration was reached. Three parameters guided the process: the position of the constrained edges, the mesh stiffness—which varied to accentuate verticality around the cones—and the force field controlling the magnitude and direction of deformation.

The structural grid was then generated on the guide surface. The triangulation of the first layer, which supports the membrane, was controlled using a circle-packing algorithm to obtain members of consistent length and regular nodes. The second layer was derived from a variable offset based on the distance from the edges and cones, with manual adjustments where necessary. The structure was then sized and checked using finite element calculation. Whenever the checks were not satisfied, the process returned to form finding and the surface was modified. Finally, the model was transferred to Revit through a direct link with Rhino and integrated into the BIM process.

Industrial building in Saccolongo: from geometry to the calculation model

In Saccolongo, Incide designed a 700 m² industrial building for the steelwork contractor Belli Group: an existing building that was extended and converted into a warehouse. Its geometry, consisting of a series of pitched portal frames, is a standard typology for this category of building.

The geometry was relatively simple and followed a recurring building type.

This was precisely why parametric modelling was useful. The goal was not to invent a new form, but to create a process that could generate both the calculation model and the construction model without starting from scratch every time a change was made. The input data were collected in an Excel spreadsheet with three sheets: geometry (portal-frame dimensions, ridge height, number and spacing of frames, purlins and bracing), loads, and sections of the members with releases and free buckling lengths. Grasshopper read the data, reconstructed the geometry in Rhino and directly generated the calculation file for Staad.Pro. After finite element calculation, the final sections updated the Excel spreadsheet, and a Grasshopper component generated the construction model in Tekla. A final step read the node verification data and created the connections in Tekla, such as base plates.

The definition is reused whenever the typology allows; for structures with a different topology, individual blocks are reused instead. The result is a workflow in which geometry, analysis and the construction model remain connected.

Is parametric design still relevant?

Parametric design remains relevant, and its scope has expanded beyond geometry. Originally developed as a tool for controlling complex forms, it can now link stages that traditionally remained separate: form definition, structural calculation, the BIM model and production. Dynamic links between parametric environments and structural calculation and BIM software, such as those used in the three cases described above, make it possible to manage the entire process using the same logic.

The most ambitious next step, already being explored in Incide’s projects, is integration with artificial intelligence.

In Incide’s designers’ view, the next step will be a system capable of learning from configurations generated by algorithms and using them as a starting point to suggest new solutions more quickly. This is a promising direction, but one that still needs to be developed. As early as the 1960s, people imagined programmes capable of turning a functional brief into a design; the complexity of real-world problems soon tempered those expectations.

Today, as then, the key lies not in the tool but in how it is used. In Rabat, Abano and Saccolongo, the same principle served different purposes: rationalising a given form, finding a new one, and automating a recurring building type. In every case, the value came from the same step: incorporating the actual design constraints into the model, so that geometry is not merely drawn, but designed.

Incide Engineering’s Research & Development department offers consultancy and tailored training on parametric design and AI-assisted design.

Would you like information? Contact us at incide@incide.it.

<fieldset class="hidden-fields-container">
</fieldset>

Il tuo nome

La tua email

Oggetto

Il tuo messaggio (facoltativo)

Δ

Find out more about how parametric design really works, its benefits, software and applications in engineering.
