Lamezia Terme Airport Structural Design | Italy

The structural design for the expansion of Lamezia Terme Airport (Italy) includes a new Departures Terminal, the seismic upgrading of the existing terminal and complementary airside and landside works. The new 200 × 80 m building features a long-span glulam roof structure, selected to enhance sustainability, reduce structural weight and minimise seismic mass. A central mezzanine with a composite steel-concrete structure is divided into three independent volumes separated by seismic joints. The site's high seismicity and liquefaction risk required deep foundations on large-diameter CFA piles. The upgrade of the existing terminal also incorporates innovative energy-dissipating towers to improve seismic performance. All works were designed in a BIM environment and in compliance with the Italian Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM), while ensuring the airport remained fully operational throughout construction.
