As part of “Porto Aperto”, an initiative organised to take stock of the infrastructure development of the Valdaro (Italyt) freight terminal and the opportunities presented by Lombardy’s new Simplified Logistics Zone (ZLS), Incide took part in the technical session dedicated to new projects in the manufacturing and logistics sectors.
Representing the engineering firm was Francesco Boldrini, who presented the multidisciplinary Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (PFTE) – developed on behalf of the Province of Mantua – to an audience of stakeholders.
The brief entrusted to Incide concerns the extension of a warehouse originally designed by our company within the port complex, confirming a long-standing collaboration in the development of Mantua’s logistics hub.
During his presentation, Francesco Boldrini outlined the key aspects of the project, designed to enhance the port’s operational capacity:
- New steel-framed span: a steel structure measuring 27 × 120 metres, with a clear internal height of up to 15 metres.
- Flexibility and multi-functionality: the structure is designed to serve both as a logistics warehouse with high storage capacity and as a workshop for locomotive maintenance.
- Integration with the railway network: the building is directly connected via new internal and external tracks, facilitating the transit and manoeuvring of trains.
- Complementary works: the project is rounded off by a new two-storey office block and the redesign of the perimeter road network to serve logistics flows.
The value of the project: integrated design, BIM and CAM sustainability
The presentation highlighted the added value of Incide Engineering’s methodological approach, which is capable of orchestrating all the specialist components of the project within a single, coherent model:
- Multidisciplinary approach: the PFTE harmonises architecture, structural engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, acoustics, geology and fire prevention.
- Coordination within a BIM environment: the integration of all disciplines through advanced digital methodologies ensures full technical compliance, interference checking and optimisation of the project’s life cycle.
- Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM for Construction): the project incorporates the latest regulatory standards regarding energy and environmental sustainability and the impact of the built environment.
As highlighted during the day’s discussion, the port of Valdaro acts as a trimodal road-rail-water hub along the Mantua–Adriatic waterway and the strategic Brenner corridor. With the steady growth in freight volumes and the boost provided by the Free Trade Zone (ZLS) regime, the project presented by Incide offers a concrete engineering solution to the need for modernisation and competitiveness within the regional logistics infrastructure.
